Design of sensor electronics for electrical capacitance tomography
The design of the sensor electronics for a tomographic imaging system based on electrical capacitance sensors is described. The performance of the sensor electronics is crucial to the performance of the imaging system. The problems associated with such a measurement process are discussed and solutions to these are described. Test results show that the present design has a resolution of 0.3 femtofarad. (For a 12-electrode system imaging an oil/gas flow, this represents a 2% gas void fraction change at the centre of the pipe) with a low noise level of 0.08 fF (RMS value), a large dynamic range of 76 dB and a data acquisition speed of 6600 measurements per second. This enables sensors with up to 12 electrodes to be used in a system with a maximum imaging rate of 100 frames per second, and thus provides an improved image resolution over the earlier 8-electrode system and an adequate electrode area to give sufficient measurement sensitivit

Electrical capacitance tomography for flow imaging: System model for development of image reconstruction algorithms and design of primary sensors
A software tool that facilitates the development of image reconstruction algorithms, and the design of optimal capacitance sensors for a capacitance-based 12-electrode tomographic flow imaging system are described. The core of this software tool is the finite element (FE) model of the sensor, which is implemented in OCCAM-2 language and run on the Inmos T800 transputers. Using the system model, the in-depth study of the capacitance sensing fields and the generation of flow model data are made possible, which assists, in a systematic approach, the design of an improved image-reconstruction algorithm. This algorithm is implemented on a network of transputers to achieve a real-time performance. It is found that the selection of the geometric parameters of a 12-electrode sensor has significant effects on the sensitivity distributions of the capacitance fields and on the linearity of the capacitance data. As a consequence, the fidelity of the reconstructed images are affected. Optimal sensor designs can, therefore, be provided, by accommodating these effect
Optimal energy efficiency link adaptation in IEEE 802.15.6 IR-UWB body area networks
© 2014 IEEE. We propose a novel link adaptation mechanism to maximize energy efficiency in IEEE 802.15.6 impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) wireless body area networks (WBANs). We consider noncoherent energy detection and autocorrelation receivers, suitable for low complexity implementations. The amount of captured energy is first modeled for the on-body WBAN channel. Using our energy capture model and Gaussian approximations for the decision statistic, the error performance of various physical layer modes of the IEEE 802.15.6 standard is derived assuming intra-symbol interference. We refer to the IEEE 802.15.6 specification as a use case. The proposed adaptation scheme can be applied to any other IR-UWB system with noncoherent receivers and is based on the estimated signal to noise ratio and the channel's energy capture index for which we propose unbiased estimators
Fast computation of radar cross-section by fast multipole method in conjunction with lifting wavelet-like transform
The fast multipole method (FMM) in conjunction with the lifting wavelet-like transform scheme is proposed for the scattering analysis of differently shaped three-dimensional perfectly electrical conducting objects. As a flexible and efficient matrix compression technique, the proposed method can sparsify the aggregation matrix and disaggregation matrix in real time with compression ratio about 30%. The computational complexity and choice of proper wavelet are also discussed. Numerical simulation and complexity analysis have shown that the proposed method can speed up the aggregation and disaggregation steps of the FMM with lower memory requirements. © 2010 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.postprin
Energy-delay tradeoffs in impulse-based ultra-wideband body area networks with noncoherent receivers
© 2014 IEEE. In this paper we address the problem of rate scheduling in the Impulse Radio (IR) ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless body area networks (WBANs) and the minimum energy required to stabilize the queuing system. Targeting low complexity WBAN applications, we assume noncoherent receivers based on energy detection and autocorrelation for all nodes. The coordinating node can minimize the average energy consumption of the system and achieve the queue backlog stability of the sensor nodes by controlling the number of pulses per symbol. We first illustrate the necessary and sufficient conditions of network stability for a multi-mode UWB system and then propose a feasible rate scheduling algorithm based on the Lyapunov optimization theory. The scheduling algorithm uses the instantaneous channel state information and the length of the local queue of all sensor nodes and can approach the optimal energy-delay tradeoff of the network. We apply our theoretical framework to the IR-UWB physical layer of the IEEE 802.15.6 standard and extract the optimal physical layer modes that can achieve the desired energy-delay tradeoff
Adaptive frequency sweep analysis for electromagnetic problems using the Thiele interpolating continued fractions
A direct rational approximation method based on Thiele interpolating continued fractions theory is proposed for fast frequency sweep analysis of electromagnetic problems. And an adaptive algorithm is also formed. Compared with the conventional rational approximation method, the proposed method can get a rational approximation directly without a great number of matrix inverse computations and doesn't need to allocate much memory for high derivatives of the dense impedance matrix. Meanwhile, the computation of surface currents by continued fractions can be sped up as compared with the traditional rational approximation. Numerical simulations for broad band scattering analysis of different shaped objects are discussed to shown the effectiveness of the present method. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2nd International Conference on Education Technology and Computer (ICETC 2010), Shanghai, China, 22-24 June 2010. LHC Discovery Potential for Non-Standard Higgs Bosons in the 3b Channel
In a variety of well motivated models, such as two Higgs Doublet Models
(2HDMs) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), there are neutral
Higgs bosons that have significantly enhanced couplings to b-quarks and tau
leptons in comparison to those of the SM Higgs. These so called non-standard
Higgs bosons could be copiously produced at the LHC in association with b
quarks, and subsequently decay into b-quark pairs. However, this production
channel suffers from large irreducible QCD backgrounds. We propose a new search
strategy for non-standard neutral Higgs bosons at the 7 TeV LHC in the 3b's
final state topology. We perform a simulation of the signal and backgrounds,
using state of the art tools and methods for different sets of selection cuts,
and conclude that neutral Higgs bosons with couplings to b-quarks of about 0.3
or larger, and masses up to 400 GeV, could be seen with a luminosity of 30
fb^{-1}. In the case of the MSSM we also discuss the complementarity between
the 3b channel and the inclusive tau pair channel in exploring the
supersymmetric parameter space.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, references added, published versio
Influence of interfacial nitrogen on edge charge trapping at the interface of gate oxide/drain extension in metal-oxide-semiconductor transistors
The influence of interfacial nitrogen on edge charge trapping at the interface of gate oxide/drain extension in metal-oxide-semiconductor transistors was investigated. Positive edge charge trapping was observed for both pure and nitrided oxides with an oxide thickness of 6.5 nm. Results showed that nitrogen at the interface enhance the edge charge trapping.published_or_final_versio
